Older people and crime reduction
Chris MacKenzie, MBE, Force Crime Reduction Advisor, has been a Police Officer for nearly 30 years (he retires in June this year) and has specialised in crime reduction for the last 20 years.
After what he describes as a "wasted youth’, he discovered adult education and in 1996 was awarded a Master of Science degree in the study of Security Management and went on to qualify as a teacher. In 2006 he was also awarded an MBE for his services in preventing crime.
He is now the Force’s Crime Reduction Advisor, engaged with developing strategies, training and also writing public information books and leaflets.
He will be giving a humorous talk on both days of the show on how older people can make a difference to crime levels in the community. After a few interactive quiz questions to establish views on the subject (not to be taken too seriously!) he'll go through the many varied practical ways that people can be of value in the community. "Retirement isn't about opting out" says Chris. "There's a lot of experience and knowledge that is very valuable to reducing crime and making a community a better place to live". He then added "Old age and guile will always outwit youthful exuberance".

The Retirement Show in 2008
Following the success of the UK’s first-ever Retirement Show, in July 2007 at London Olympia, the organisers have announced that the show will be repeated in London in 2008, but will also take place in Manchester and Glasgow as well. "Our research shows that visitors generally travelled for up to two hours to get to the show (although some did come from as far as Truro, Harrogate and North Wales). The audience for the show is therefore regionally-based, and we are very confident indeed that the show can be repeated in Manchester, London and Glasgow in 2008, with each show attracting a different cohort of visitors," commented show director Dr Robert McCaffrey. "We have received a lot of interest in all three shows, and we expect to take our first bookings for the shows in the near future."
